Holi’s chemical colors pose a risk of many diseases including skin! Learn safety tips from experts
Holi is a festival celebrated with enthusiasm and zeal, but the synthetic colors used during this time can pose many health risks, especially in case of sensitive skin. Dr. Ruby Sachdev, Consultant Aesthetic Physician, Gleneagles Hospital, Richmond Road, Bengaluru, explains in detail about the use of synthetic colors and the harm they cause to health.
1. Skin Irritation and Allergic Reactions
These synthetic colors used during Holi contain harsh chemicals and dyes which can cause skin irritation and allergies.
Precautions
Choose natural or herbal colors made from plant-based ingredients like turmeric, beetroot and henna. The risk of irritation is greatly reduced due to these. If you still have doubts, then play Holi with them only after doing a patch test so that irritation or allergy can be detected.
2. Contact Dermatitis
Prolonged exposure to synthetic colors can cause contact dermatitis. Due to this, redness, itching and swelling are seen in the skin.
Precautions
Wear such clothes that cover the entire body or have minimal skin contact with the colours. Also, do not forget to apply moisturizer or a thick layer of coconut oil on the skin before playing Holi. These will help in creating a barrier for protection.

3. Eye Irritation and Infections
Synthetic colors can cause not only irritation but also infection if the color comes in contact with the eyes.
Precautions
To avoid this, wear eye protection glasses like sunglasses or swimming goggles. If color accidentally gets into the eyes, immediately wash the eyes with clean water and if the burning sensation persists for a long time, contact a doctor.
4. Respiratory Issues
Inhaling airborne particles released from synthetic dyes can cause respiratory problems, especially in patients with asthma or allergies.
Precautions
To avoid this, do not use powdered synthetic colors because they emit more airborne particles. Make a paste by adding some water to natural or herbal color and then use it.

5. Toxicity
Some synthetic colors contain toxic chemicals like mercury and chromium which cause harm if absorbed into the skin.
Precautions
First educate yourself and then others about the toxicity of synthetic colours. Also teach children to avoid such colors.
6. Post-Holi Skincare
The most important thing before playing Holi is to remove the color from the skin carefully so that it does not get damaged.
Precautions
Remove the color by gently rubbing the skin with a mild soap and lukewarm water. To moisturize the skin, use some hydrating lotion or coconut oil. These will help in protecting the skin from irritation and dryness.
By adopting these precautions, Holi can be enjoyed without any worries. Also, contribute to the protection of the environment by promoting natural and herbal colors.
